Churches With A Heart For Military Personnel and Families

Church: Seaport Community Church
Location: Mystic, Connecticut
Military Pastor:  Rev. Jim Detweiler

Message: We have done some real practical outreaches that have been very effective. In October we hosted what we called "Light the Night" at two different homes in Navy housing. We had coffee and baked goods free for the parents, and puppet shows for the kids. It was very well received. Then in December we did our second Free gift wrap at the Navy Exchange. We just had a young sailor in service last Sunday who came to Seaport because someone wrapped his gifts. It is a constant challenge since folks move so frequently, but God is so concerned about the one, just like you shared. We are also launching later this year a cell based ministry to marriages (MMI) Our desire is to strengthen military marriages to face the rigorous challenges of military life.

We have a couple of accountants in the church so we try to work with military families who need financial advice. On Super Bowl Sunday we had a Super Bowl night where we invited the military in to watch the game. We projected it really big on the wall and had a great time! We're near the special operations training command, so we anoint the men who are going over to Afghanastan, the elders lay hands on them, and pray over them before they deploy. We're planning an Oil Change Day in conjunction with the Men's Ministry in the church. The men in the church are going to change the oil in the cars of the women whose husbands are deployed.

We had a Armed Forces Appreciation Day celebration the other day and it went great. We had a huge turn out.  We gathered pictures and info on each service person (active, reserves & retired) and did a Powerpoint presentation along with the song God Bless the USA.  It was great.  There wasn't a dry eye in the house.  They presented the colors along with the flags of all the forces. Some of the WWII, Korean and Vietnam guys even wore their uniforms. Some of them even stood and gave their testimonies of how God preserved them in combat.  It was great!
