Initiating A Home Away From Home

The Basic Program

This is a ministry of hospitality reaching out to the single military men and women stationed in an area. Its purpose is to involve the single man or woman in a Spirit-filled home and family where they can experience the love of Christ in a family relationship.

Saturday Activity Night

This is a weekly group activity for servicemen from the adopted base. It includes bowling, ice skating, miniature golfing, roller skating, etc. and is intended to be a fun activity. This is followed by food (hamburgers, hot dogs, etc.) at the church or the host family’s home.

Sunday Dinner After Church

After church/chapel on Sunday morning the participating families invite the servicemen or women to their home for dinner. Dinner is followed by an afternoon of games, tv, visiting, etc.

Bible Study

There will be servicemembers who will accept Christ as their Savior. They will immediately need to be involved in a personal, New Believers Bible Study, established by their hosts on a weekly basis to establish and ground them in the faith and in the Word of God.

Personal Mentoring

Personal mentoring will develop as a result of the relationships developed between the servicemen and women and the host participants in the program. This will involve time and attention given to loving them and living the Christian life in front of them and including them in family activities as much as the host families are able.

Special Events

As special events come to the area, like a circus, a concert or just a day off for the service personnel, the host families invite them to go to these events with them. This gives the servicemember additional things to do and increases the connection with the family.

Referrals and Maintaining Contact

After a servicemember is transferred out of your area it is vital to maintain contact with them through emails, regular letters, and care packages. Many times after a serviceman or woman establishes close relationships in an area it hurts to suddenly be cut off. If possible, get in touch with other military ministries or churches in the area the servicemember is transferring to and get them involved right away in good fellowship.
