The
Holy Spirit, third Person in the Holy Trinity, is very active and from
the following passages of Scripture you can see how important He is and
what He does. |
Genesis
1:1-2
"In
the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was
formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the
Spirit of God was hovering over the waters."
-
God created the heavens and
the earth.
-
The Spirit of God hovered over
the waters in the beginning.
Genesis
1:26
"Then
God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them
rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock,
over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."
In this passage the references
to "OUR" refer to the Holy Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
THE HOLY SPIRIT
WAS ACTIVE AT THE BIRTH OF JESUS
Matthew
1:18-21
"This
is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged
to be married
to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child
through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man
and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce
her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared
to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take
Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy
Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name
Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
Jesus was conceived by the
Holy Spirit.
THE HOLY SPIRIT
WAS ACTIVE AT JESUS' BAPTISM
Matthew
3:16-17
"As
soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment
heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove
and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom
I love; with him I am well pleased."
The Holy Spirit landed on
Jesus in the form of a dove at His baptism. The voice of the Father was
heard declaring Jesus to be His Son. Again, the three persons of the Trinity
were all present at Jesus' baptism.
THE HOLY SPIRIT
WAS ACTIVE IN JESUS’ RESURRECTION
Romans
8:11
"And
if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he
who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies
through his Spirit, who lives in you."
-
Spirit of God raised Jesus from
the dead.
-
Spirit of God will also raise
us from the dead.
THE HOLY SPIRIT
WAS ACTIVE IN OUR SPIRITUAL BIRTH
John
3:5-8
Jesus
answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless
he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the
Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying,
'You must be born again.' The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear
its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going.
So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."
We were born of water when
we were born physically (water of the womb).
We were born of the Spirit,
spiritually, when we asked Jesus into our hearts.
1
Corinthians 6:9-11
"Do
you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not
be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers
nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy
nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of
God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified,
you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit
of our God."
We were washed, sanctified,
and justified by the Holy Spirit.
1
Corinthians 6:19-20
"Do
you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you,
whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought
at a price. Therefore honor God with your body."
Our bodies are the temple
of the Holy Spirit. He actually lives within us after we receive Jesus
Christ as our Savior.
THE HOLY SPIRIT
IS PART OF THE BAPTISMAL FORMULA
Matthew
28:19
"Therefore
go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit..."
Jesus told the church to
baptize new believers in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
THE HOLY SPIRIT
IS ACTIVE IN THE BELIEVER’S LIFE
John
14:15-21, 25-27
"If
you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and
he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever--the Spirit of
truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows
him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will
not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will
not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will
live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are
in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the
one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too
will love him and show myself to him."..."All this I have spoken while
still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will
send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything
I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not
give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and
do not be afraid."
-
The Holy Spirit is the spirit
of truth.
-
The Holy Spirit dwells in you
after you receive Jesus as Savior.
-
The Holy Spirit will teach you.
-
The Holy Spirit will remind
you of everything Jesus said.
John
15:26-27
"When
the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit
of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me. And you
also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning."
The Holy Spirit talks about
Jesus. He lifts up Jesus Christ. We are also to testify to others - in
other words, we too must talk about Jesus as the Holy Spirit does.
John
16:5-15
"Now
I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you
going?' Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief. But
I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless
I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send
him to you. When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard
to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin, because men do
not believe in me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the
Father, where you can see me no longer; and in regard to judgment, because
the prince of this world now stands condemned. "I have much more to say
to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes,
he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will
speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He
will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known
to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the
Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you."
-
The Holy Spirit will convict
people of sin, righteousness, and judgment to come.
-
The Holy Spirit will guide you
into all truth.
-
The Holy Spirit will tell you
what is yet to come.
-
The Holy Spirit will glorify
Jesus!
WE ARE TO
BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT!
Matthew
3:11
"I
baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is
more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize
you with the Holy Spirit and with fire."
John the Baptist said that
Jesus would baptize people with the Holy Spirit.
Ephesians
5:17-18
"Therefore
do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. Do not get drunk
on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit."
The Apostle Paul wrote that
believers were to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
WE
GET POWER FROM THE HOLY SPIRIT
Acts
1:8
"But
you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will
be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the
ends of the earth."
We are to be witnesses for Jesus
by the way we live.
We are to be witnesses for Jesus
by the things we say.
WE RECEIVE GIFTS
FROM THE HOLY SPIRIT
I
Corinthians 12:1-11
Now
about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant. You
know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and
led astray to mute idols. Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking
by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus
is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit. There are different kinds of gifts,
but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same
Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all
of them in all men. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is
given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit the
message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the
same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing
by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy,
to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different
kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All
these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each
one, just as he determines."
The Holy Spirit gives spiritual
gifts to believers. He distributes them as He determines is best.
WE ARE TO LIVE
BY THE SPIRIT
Galatians
5:13-26
You,
my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge
the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love. The entire law is
summed up in a single command: "Love your neighbor as yourself." If you
keep on biting and devouring each other, watch out or you will be destroyed
by each other. So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the
desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary
to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They
are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. But
if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law. The acts of the sinful
nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry
and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition,
dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn
you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the
kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against
such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified
the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit,
let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking
and envying each other."
-
We are to live by (with the
help of) the Holy Spirit.
-
We are to be led by the Holy
Spirit.
-
We are to produce the fruit
of the Spirit in our lives.
-
We are to keep in step with
the Holy Spirit.
THE HOLY SPIRIT
REVEALS GOD’S SECRETS TO US
1
Corinthians 2:6-16
"We
do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom
of this age
or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. No, we speak of
God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined
for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age understood
it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. However,
as it is written: "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived
what God has prepared for those who love him"--but God has revealed it
to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things
of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's
spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except
the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world but the
Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given
us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in
words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.
The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the
Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand
them, because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual man makes judgments
about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man's judgment:
"For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?" But
we have the mind of Christ."
God has revealed His secrets
to us by the Holy Spirit. The natural man (unbeliever) does not understand
the things taught by the Holy Spirit. |
